Ranjev Kainth - Beyond icebreakers - understanding, fostering and sustaining psychological safety in online education
This talk was first delivered in September 2020 as part of a faculty development afternoon for the QMUL MSc Emergency and Resuscitation Medicine. The MSc E&RM is a distance learning MSc open to a UK and international audience of paramedics, nurses and doctors who want to further their knowledge, understanding and critical skills in Emergency Medicine. The faculty are experts in their field from around the world who are keen to improve the quality of education the students receive. The presentation has been edited to make it applicable to a wider audience but the occasional reference to people who were present on the day remain.
Raj is a paediatrician who is currently undertaking a PhD in medical education. His Masters in Clinical Education (IOE) dissertation focused on debriefing and his PhD continues this journey, examining the relation of debrief interactions and participant learning. A core philosophy of teaching practice, and belief of how participants maximise their learning is centred around the concept of psychological safety. Alongside his PhD, he teaches at King’s College London on the postgraduate programme in Clinical Education and at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Simulation and Interactive Learning (SaIL) Centre as senior simulation faculty.
